Using Discord Permissions

This document explains what Use Discord Permissions means in Archivian, and how it works.

This setting lets you use Discord permissions to control what your Archivian staff have access to. You can turn it on or off at any time under Staff Management → General → Use Discord Permissions.

  • You’re trying Archivian out.
  • You just want to get started fast.
  • You don’t need full control over permissions in Archivian.
  • You’re not yet used to how Archivian works.
  • You need complete control over permissions in Archivian.
  • Archivian grants too much to staff with this feature enabled.
  • Your server is experiencing hijacking of staff Discord accounts or of the server.
  • You need permissions to update as fast as possible.

Many permissions in Archivian aren’t covered by Discord at all (there’s no equivalent — for example Appeals), or Discord isn’t granular enough. So Archivian keeps pre-configured groups of permissions per Discord permission. For example, if a member can Ban in Discord, Archivian loads a pre-configured set of Archivian permissions that makes sense for someone who can ban. If they have Administrator, they get almost as much as the server owner (with a few exceptions).

These permissions are added on top of whatever the staff member already has — Use Discord Permissions only ever adds to the overall permissions.

What if it’s not giving enough permissions?

Section titled “What if it’s not giving enough permissions?”

If Use Discord Permissions doesn’t grant enough, you can use Archivian’s own permission system to add the missing pieces. The staff member needs a title, and you grant permissions to that title using permission sets. See:
